SOLO CELLO RECITAL

A solo cello programme based around Bach's suites, mirrored by the caprices of Dall'Abaco and the dances of Ruvo, Ciaconna and Tarentella. Bach was greatly influenced by Vivaldi, which shows the aura and influence of Venice at that time. Dall'Abaco must have been inspired by Bach for his caprices, and the eighteenth century is woven and shaped by all these influences.

Dall'Abaco, caprice in D minor
Bach, first suite for solo cello in G major

Marcello, sonata VII for harpsichord - Adagio
Garavaglia, sonata for cello and continuo

Dall'Abaco, caprice in C minor
Taglietti, aria
Dall'Abaco, caprice in E minor

Ruvo, chaconne
Bach, third suite in C major

Ruvo, tarantella

Dichter TRIO

This programme was born of the desire to invite the listener into the intimate home of Clara and Robert Schumann in the mid-nineteenth century. By travelling from Leipzig to Dresden or Düsseldorf, we hope to ‘open the door of their living room’, where the couple and their artist friends would meet and talk about the music that touched and inspired them, music of the past as well as that of their generation, their children playing nearby, filling the room with joyful laughter.

R. Schumann, ‘Vom fremden Ländern und Menschen’, excerpt from Kinderszenen, op. 13 no. 1 - arr. tiro
C. Schumann, Piano trio op. 17 - Andante
C. Schumann, ‘Soirées musicales’ op. 6 - Notturno for piano solo
R. Schumann, Piano trio op. 80
J.S. Bach, Prelude BWV938 E minor for solo piano
N. Gade, Elegy from the Akvarellen op. 19 - arr. violin piano
F. Mendelssohn, Andante and Allegro brillante for piano 4 hands op. 92 (guest: Jorge Gonzalez Buajasan)
Theodor Kirchner, excerpts from Bunte Blatter op. 83
R. Schumann, 5 stücke im volkston n°2 - Langsam, cello and piano
Theodor Kirchner, excerpts from Bünte Blatter op. 83

Towards the end of Romanticism, composers' language remained highly lyrical, but tended towards a different aesthetic. Salon music became more complex. We are at a crossroads. This programme introduces us to the work of Henriette Renié, who openly quotes Franck's sonata (who had been her teacher) in her cello sonata. Finally, we look to the future with the figure of Debussy, who changed the face of French music. In this early work, composed in 1882, we note the inspiration of Spain, which we find later in the cello sonata and in Iberia.

Franck, Melancholy
Renié, Sonata for cello and piano
Franck, Sonata for cello and piano FWV 8
Debussy, Nocturne and scherzo
